California Congressman Eric Swalwell is denying that he farted during a live appearance on Monday's Hardball With Chris Matthews. As Swalwell was talking about President Trump "[using] taxpayer dollars to help him cheat an election," a loud noise that sounded suspiciously like a fart could be heard interrupting him. “It was not me!!!!!” he later told a BuzzFeed reporter via text message. “Ha. And I didn’t hear it when I was speaking.” Swalwell continued to deny the fart even after the journalist said it looked like he was trying to stop himself from laughing after it happened: “I definitely did not hear it," he insisted. The official Twitter account forHardballbacked Swalwell up. “Sorry to disappoint the conspiracy theorists--it was the #hardball mug scraping across the desk,” the show tweeted along with a link to buy said mug. Nevertheless, "#fartgate" trended on Twitter as people debated what the noise was.
