Spaulding claims heptathlon gold, 'Dogs remain in first through day two

CLOVIS, Calif. - The Fresno State track & field team picked up four more medals on day two of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted at Veterans Memorial Stadium this week.

Through eight scored events, the Bulldog women currently sit in first place with 65 points, and are seven points ahead of second place Colorado State.

How it happened

The morning began with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon which saw Bulldogs earning medals in both events for the first time since joining the Mountain West.

Ella Spaulding held onto her first place lead after day one and closed out with 5,551 points. Of the seven events, she set personal bests in five of them. In Friday's events, Spaulding opened the day with a personal best jump of 5.79m to win the event. She fell behind to second in the heptathlon standings after the javelin, but turned on the motor in the 800m with a first place and personal best time of 2:15.35 to earn her 888 points and retake the lead.

Spaulding became the first Bulldog to win the heptathlon since Jestena Mattson in 2019.

Madison Hutton took fourth in the heptathlon with 5,270 points. She took fourth in the event at the championship for the second straight season, and it was her most points in the event since 2023.

Garrett Ostrinski earned his first career MW medal, taking third in the decathlon. After finishing day one in fourth place, he maintained a steady presence through the first three events on Friday before an exciting first place finish in the 1500m run to put him over the third-place threshold. Ostrinski finished with 7,055 points, the first time in his career he surpassed the 7,000 mark.

Going up against one of the nation's top throwers in Mya Lesner, senior Cierra Jackson took silver in the shot put while bettering her own program record and personal best. Jackson threw for a mark of 17.77m, besting her previous record of 17.39m set at the 2024 championships.

As the night wound down, the women's long jump continued on as Janae Heffernan and Matilde Guarino competed for the 'Dogs. Both advanced into the finals, and Heffernan hit her personal best of 6.06m/19-10.75 on her fourth jump. She continued to do better, launching for a 6.18m/20-3.5 mark on her next jump to retake third place. Heffernan earned the bronze in the event, holding off San Jose State's Eve Divinity.

Guarino earned a pair of points for the 'Dogs with a seventh place finish and jump of 5.84m to close out the scoring on Friday.

Notable

Fresno State has had at least one MW champion in each year since joining the league.

Ella Spaulding, a sophomore, became the youngest Bulldog to win the MW heptathlon title.

Spaulding's 5,551 points in the heptathlon are second all-time at Fresno State.

Garrett Ostrinski took third in the decathlon, becoming the first Bulldog to medal in the event since joining the MW.

Ostrinski is just the second Bulldog on the men's team to medal at the MW Outdoor Championship since 2017.

Cierra Jackson closes out her career with her fourth medal in the shot put (three in outdoor, one in indoor).

Janae Heffernan owns the program's fifth-longest jump in the long jump. It is the longest jump by a Bulldog since Rachela Pace in 2024.

Heffernan earned Fresno State's first medal in the long jump since 2016 (Je'Nia Sears).
