SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cierra Jackson began Day 2 of the Hornet Invitational on Saturday with just the second discus throw of over 60 meters in her career. The Fresno State senior won the event while also finishing off her day with a second-place result in the shot put.
Jackson wasted no time when the discus competition began with her first attempt registering 60.14m/197‑04. It was the second-longest throw of the Bulldog's career. It was more than enough for the win as Cal's Lucija Leko's final attempt was more than three meters short of Jackson's top mark. Leko, though, bested the Bulldog at the end of the day. On her final attempt in the shot put, Jackson moved into the top spot with a toss of 16.02m/52‑6.75. Leko then landed a toss of 16.21m/53-2.25 to retake the top spot and move Jackson back into second.
Jackson's win in the discus was not Fresno State's only win of the day as the women's 4x400 relay composed of Itzia Mejia Garcia, Janae Heffernan, Miana Giovannini and Jewel Ash clocked a time of 3:39.02. It was the eight-fastest time in program history. Individually, Ash made her first appearance of the season in the 100-meter hurdles for the 'Dogs. A day after taking first in the 400 hurdles, the senior finished third in the 100 hurdles at 13.61, the third-fastest time in Fresno State's history.
The women's steeplechase also saw a Bulldog enter the program's Top 10 in an event. Kylie Ward's time of 11:14.86 moved the sophomore to sixth all-time.
