FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team fell short of their strong-will comeback attempt against Wyoming on Sunday afternoon at Spalding G. Wathen, 4-3.
How It Happened
Andjela Lopicic and Klara Vukicevic started down three games on court two. The pair were unable to take hold of the match, falling six games to one against the Cowgirls Ceinos/Trencheva.
Charlotte Gisclon and Pauline Montiel had a one game lead (3-2) before the Cowgirls took it back, 4-3. It then became a doubles match thriller on the other two courts. As Matilde Magrini and Yinglak Jittakoat fought back after being down two games to five, to then take a 6-5 lead on court one. Gisclon and Montiel were sitting five games all after also being down two games to five. Gisclon and Montiel brought the point back to life after a 7-5 win on court three. Magrini and Jittakoat fell in the tiebreaker 6(5) -7(7) to Borodina/ Mashabayeva in the top flight. Cowgirls' took the lead going into singles play.
Montiel secured the first point of the match for the 'Dogs with a clean two set win over Abriola; 6-3, 6-2. Eliza Dunbar misses on another opportunity for a conference singles win after falling to Wyoming's Mashabayeva in straight sets on court five (6-4, 6-4). There was no shortage of energy from Magrini. The senior collected another point for the Bulldogs at No. 1 after a first-set tiebreaker win and kept it quick, holding her opponent to four games (6-4). It was tied 2-2 as three courts were left playing for the point in the third set. Jittakoat dropped her match at No. 2 in an intense three-sets (7-6 (10-7), 4-6, 6-2).
Gisclon and Lopicic were left to battle for the last two points that would seal the wins, both 'Dogs were in the third set. Gisclon grabbed her third conference win after taking the second and third sets on No.3. The senior played the better end of the third set tiebreak to remain undefeated in MW play. Lopicic stumbled on a short lob by Wyoming's Trencheva that called game in the third set.
