SNL's Pete Davidson has come under fire for a joke during his Weekend Update segment which targeted a political candidate and veteran who lost an eye in Afghanistan. Davidson gave his first impressions of some midterm election candidates and made jokes about both Republicans and Democrats. But then he jokes about Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who lost an eye in an IED attack. He now wears a black eye-patch and is running for a House seat in Texas. Davidson joked, "You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie. I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee wasn't amused and released a statement slamming Davidson and calling for an apology. It reads, "Getting dumped by your pop star girlfriend is no excuse for lashing out at a decorated war hero who lost his eye serving our country. Pete Davidson and NBC should immediately apologize to Dan, and to the millions of veterans and military families who tune in every weekend -- because they’re not laughing.”
Crenshaw himself commented on it saying, "Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes."
