Thai Beach Made Famous by Leo DiCaprio Movie Closes to Tourists
On Friday, Thailand began blocking tourists from visiting one of its most popular beaches in an effort to combat the destruction that's occurred from crowds. Maya Beach on the Thai island of Koh Phi Phi became famous after it was heavily featured in the 2000 film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The Tourism Authority of Thailand said the bay will be closed to the public from June 1 to September 30 so that its coral reefs and sea life can recover. Officials will also research ways to better care for the area's sustainability.
