Mittens & Other Items Needed For Animals In Australia!

People have been donating knitted mittens for koala paws that have been burnt in Australia's ravaging bushfires.

Since last month, fires have been ravaging south Australia, Victoria and the eastern states of New South Wales and Queensland - and with it has come a heartbreaking threat to the country's wildlife.

So far, 350 koalas are thought to have perished in the devastating bush fires, but thanks to animal charities, many more have been saved.

People are now donating hand-knitted mittens for koalas who have burnt their pads escaping from the fires.

They're also donating knitted pouches for possums, joeys and marsupials who have been orphaned in the blazes.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has received so many knitted goods, they stress they are are no longer asking for donations of this kind.

The Rescue Collective, a non-profit charity saving the creatures and nursing them back to health, say they are overwhelmed with the support they've received.

Nicole Blums, an organiser to the operation, toldABC Radio Brisbane: "If it's an animal that's lived in the bush they're ending up in wildlife hospitals at the moment. Reptiles, koalas, joeys, snakes are all being found by people either trying to escape the fires or being caught in them.

"We have had people knitting koala mittens for burnt pads and sewing pouches for marsupials.

"People are so passionate to help the animals, they want to save our national emblems and they want to do whatever they can to help.

"There are many areas that no-one can get into at the moment - people are finding animals on the side of the road or in the homes as they're fleeing out of the bush.

"We're getting them the supplies they need but we do know this is the tip of the iceberg and the worse is yet to come."

To add to this, a GoFundMe for bushfire-affected koalas has become the second-largest campaign on the crowdfunding platform in Australia.

Began by Port Macquarie Koala Hospital the page has now received over $1 million in donations with people desperate to save their national treasures.

The $25,000 goal for the rescue and rehabilitation of the koalas was quickly surpassed when the fund was started on 31st October.
