Laine Hardy was named the winner ofAmerican Idol’s17th season (second season on ABC) on Sunday night. During the three-hour finale, Hardy competed against fellow Top 3 finalists Alejandro Aranda and Madison VanDenburg, with each dedicating a song to their hometowns. Highlights included Hardy performing a swampy cover of Mark Broussard's "Home,” which spurred judge Katy Perry to say, "If you apply yourself like you have applied yourself, and don't get lazy, you're going to be one of the biggest stars on the planet." AsPeoplepoints out, Hardy appeared on the 16th season of Idollast year. While he wasn’t planning on auditioning for the show a second time, he accompanied a friend to her audition, and was asked by judges Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie to give it another try. Aranda was named the runner-up and VanDenburg took third place. After being named the winner, Hardy performed his new single "Flame."
