Daryl Dragon, the musician best known as the Captain in the yacht rock group The Captain and Tennille, died on Wednesday due to renal failure. He was 76. "He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly,” Toni Tennille, Dragon's longtime partner and ex-wife, says in a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter.“I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him.” Dragon was a classically trained pianist and got his start playing keyboard for The Beach Boys from 1967 to 1972. He was given the nickname “Captain” by Beach Boys singer Mike Love, thanks to his habit of wearing a captain's hat onstage. Dragon met musical and eventual romantic partner Tennille in 1971, and they went on to win the Grammy for Record of the Year for Love Will Keep Us Together in 1976. While Dragon and Tennille divorced in 2014, they remained close friends.
