Penny Marshall, the Bronx-born actress and top-grossing director best known for playing Laverne DeFazio on the hit sitcom Laverne & Shirley, has passed away at the age of 75 due to complications from diabetes. Marshall, who was fellow director Rob Reiner's first wife and the sister of the late Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall, directed such hit films as Big, A League of Their Own and Awakenings. A huge Los Angeles Lakers fan who often sat courtside, Marshall was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in 2009, and is survived by her only child, daughter Tracy. Reiner, Ava DuVernay, Rosie O'Donnell, and Mayim Bialik were among the many stars who took to Twitter on Tuesday to pay their respects.
