Whale Breaks Record For Largest Recycled Plastic Sculpture

A life-size whale sculpture in San Francisco has set a Guinness World Record. According to UPI, not only did the sculpture break a record for largest recycled plastic sculpture, it also calling attention to the massive amount of plastic that pollutes the world's oceans. The 84-foot-long, 13-foot-high sculpture was created by out of recycled plastic by artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova in conjunction with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. "Every nine minutes, 300,000 pounds of plastic--the weight of a blue whale--makes it into the ocean," said an aquarium spokesperson. "To draw attention to this enormous problem, we built this life-sized installation to get the word out and educate people." The sculpture was on display at San Francisco's Chrissy Field, which is set on the San Francisco Bay.
