'Dogs struggle to hold off Mustang offense

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State baseball team fell to Cal Poly 15-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by Tyler Davis, who went three for five with three singles and one run scored.

The 'Dogs drop their overall record to 13-10 (7-4 Mountain West) with the loss to the Mustangs (7-14).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Mustang offense dominated early as they scored six runs on six hits in the top of the first, and another run in the second after a solo shot from Cal Poly's Joe Yorke.

The 'Dogs responded in the bottom of the third with two runs off a sacrifice fly from Bobby Blandford and a single from Marco Pirruccello.

Yorke powered his second hit of the game to left center in the top of the fourth to drive in another run for the Mustangs. In the bottom of the inning, a single from Grady Morgan gave the 'Dogs their third run of the game.

The Bulldog bats began to heat up in the bottom of the fifth with a double from reining Mountain West Freshman of the Week Murf Gray, and singles from Sammy Augustine, Tyler Davis and Travis Welker that led two runs across the plate.

Cal Poly secured three more runs off four hits in the top of the sixth inning before the start of a two-inning hitting drought for both teams.

The Mustangs sealed in their win with an additional four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth to solidify their 15-5 win in Fresno.

UP NEXT: Fresno State continues the homestand this weekend with a three-game series against nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara. Game one of the series will take place at 6:05 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium on Friday, March 31.
